It is not uncommon for vehicle owners to use the same wiper blades regardless of the season. However, there is a great deal of difference in regular and winter blades. The winter variety is designed to endure the harsh weather conditions of the season and provide greater visibility.

Winter blades do not have the lattice, springy frames. Instead, the frame is sturdier, as it is manufactured as one piece. The squeegee blades are also different. Summer versions are thinner and consist of mostly rubber, which remains flexible in warm weather. On the other hand, winter versions are made using rubber and other compounds to ensure flexibility regardless of the outside temperature and the ice that often forms on windshields.

The way in which winter blades are created includes a protective covering that prevents clogging, which may interfere with the blade's movements to remove ice and snow.
