In a press release from yesterday, BMW proudly announced that it is the winning bidder to provide the Los Angeles Police Department with electric vehicles. The automaker will provide 100 all-electric BMW i3s for the department's transportation fleet.
After a field test of various electric vehicles, LAPD selected the i3 because of its EPA rated best-in-class fuel efficiency, reliability, and the state-of-the-art Connected Drive system that features fleet management applications. The i3's compact form factor and use of lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) allow for a tight turning radius, making it a little easier to navigate congested city streets.
Another factor that played in BMW's favor is the company's extensive knowledge of charging infrastructure Greenlots will provide 100 Level 2 charges and four DC fast chargers to the department.
“We should be thinking green in everything we do — and these new EVs show how local government can lead,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Our sustainability plan pushes L.A. to speed adoption of greener practices and technologies, which also save money and resources.”
