2019 BMW X5 vs 2019 Lexus NX 300

Serving Brentwood, TN

While crossovers generally provide the best of both worlds by combining attributes of sedans and SUVs, some customers want one that also provides more advanced or higher-level features. Two prime examples are the BMW X5 and the Lexus NX. In 2019, the X5 is still fresh from the complete redesign of the year before to usher in the nameplate’s fourth generation of production. Meanwhile, the NX—officially known as NX 300—is four years into its production cycle, with nary a change made for this model year. Both vehicles come from reputed automakers, but you should choose the 2019 X5 over the 2019 NX 300 because of the following:

Engine Output

On the 2019 BMW X5, you can choose between the six-cylinder-powered xDrive40i trim and the V8-powered xDrive50i trim. The former is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline 6-cylinder (I6) engine, which provides a total output of 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. And the latter is a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which generates 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Both are brawnier than and outgun the lone engine on the 2019 Lexus NX 300, which is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that puts out 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Handling Quality

BMWs are known for blending premium quality with energetic handling, and the 2019 X5 is no exception. The 8-speed automatic transmission pinned to the engine comes with Sport and Manual shift modes to heighten excitement, the standard xDrive all-wheel drivetrain system provides exceptional grip on the road, the Servotronic power-steering assist ensures sharp and precise turning and cornering, and the double wishbone front suspension and lightweight multi-link integral rear suspension is more than enough to absorb turbulence on less-than-smooth surfaces. The result is a fun-to-drive quality that does not compromise the cabin’s serenity. By contrast, the 2019 Lexus NX 300 is not constructed to be awfully athletic. Although it is a bit firmer than most other Lexus vehicles, it ultimately is not quite as nimble or exciting as its BMW counterpart.

Size Classification

Although both the 2019 BMW X5 and the 2019 Lexus NX 300 provide two rows of seats to accommodate up to five occupants, the former is designed and classified as a mid-size crossover while the latter is designed and classified as a smaller, compact crossover. As a result, you will get more interior space with the X5. You will also get more cargo volume for your luggage. The BMW X5 has a standard cargo volume of 33.9 cubic feet, with the option of expanding it to a max of 72.3 cubic feet by folding down the rear seats. On the Lexus NX, those numbers are 17.7 cubic feet and 54.6 cubic feet, respectively.
